Well, the green teas from Nepal are quite exotic and unique to say the least. However, Nepali green teas are fairly new. Unlike traditional green tea producing countries such as Japan and China, Nepal started producing green teas only in the 90s. Kanchanjangha Tea Estate and Research Center (KTE-RC) was one of the first organic tea gardens to take a shot at creating and educating the general public in Nepal about green teas.
The tea gardens in Nepal, especially Kanchanjangha Tea Estate and Research Center (KTE-RC), are situated in the foothills of Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. Unlike commercially produced teas around the world, all our teas are hand-plucked in the serene hills of eastern Nepal. The climate, elevation, rural pollution free environment and its traditional cultivation method create the most unique teas; ones that are of exceptional taste and quality but are relatively rare and unknown to the world.
Our green tea is quite unique as it does not follow the traditional green tea processing technique where rolling is rarely done. Our green teas go through an enzyming and rolling process which makes them quite distinct.
Teas anywhere in the world are never washed in its production process, therefore, the first time it gets washed it your cup. Because our green teas are all certified organic, they are free from any pesticides or chemicals that might get into your cup.
All our green teas are packed at origin, which means that you, as a customer, are the first person opening the packet of tea after it has been sealed in Nepal. Just imagine how fresh that sounds. Learn more about what makes our Nepal green tea special.
Types of Green Tea
We currently have two types of pure green teas Kanchanjangha Verde and Ganesha Green and one blend Mystique Mélange that includes some exotic spices and herbs.
Our Kanchanjangha Verde is the classic green tea that we have been producing for over 30 years and is the most popular one in Nepal. The most unique feature of our classic green tea is that it can withstand higher temperatures compared to other lighter green teas. Furthemore, the slight rolling process this organic green tea goes through brings out its floral and fruity undertones to life.
Compared to our Kanchanjangha Verde, our Ganesha Green is a step-up which has a finer pluck and goes through an enzymer machine to bring out the sweet notes. When you brew our organic green tea right, the buttery sweet notes are sure to delight both the tea novice and a connoisseur.
Lastly, our creative blend of green tea with some ayurvedic herbs bring out a balanced cup that anyone can enjoy from our Mystique Mélange. The exotic mix of ginger, cinnamon leaf, orange peel, mint and lemongrass creates a subtle and smooth brew cold or hot.
Is Our Green Tea Caffeinated?
Yes! In fact, all green teas (camellia sinensis) are caffeinated. However, the amount of caffeine is quite less than coffee. On average you can expect about ⅓ caffeine in a cup of green tea then that in a cup of coffee.
How is Nepal Green Tea Made?
The process of Nepali green tea is quite unique from that of a traditional green tea. However, the essence of making green tea is the same. The idea is to not let the tea leaves oxidize and allow it to retain as much of the nutrients and form of a fresh tea leaf. The oxidation process is halted by heating of the freshly hand-plucked tea leaves after it arrives in the factory. Our green teas go through a slight rolling process before they are finally dried.
The complete production process of each of our green teas is noted on the product page.
Are there Health Benefits to Drinking Green Tea?
Oh yes! Green tea, and as a matter of fact all teas (Camellia Sinensis), contain some major compounds that aid in health and wellness. Polyphenols in green tea are the source for its high level of antioxidants which promote overall health.
